Overview

Race the Picture is the most energetic hybrid team building activity in the Trebound catalogue, combining the adrenaline of a competitive outdoor challenge with the creativity and collaboration of a shared painting task. Teams race through a series of clues, puzzles, and physical challenges scattered across the venue. Only teams that complete each challenge receive the materials they need to paint their section of the final picture.

The activity operates in two distinct phases that require entirely different skills. In the racing phase, teams compete individually, with speed, strength, problem-solving, and communication under pressure determining who earns their materials first. In the painting phase, the dynamic shifts completely: individual team success no longer matters. The completed picture requires every team's contribution, and teams that have finished their racing section begin helping others complete theirs.

The transformation from competitor to collaborator is the activity's defining insight and one of the most powerful team dynamics experiences available in outdoor team building.

The Blueprint — How It Works

1

Treasure Hunt Phase

Teams race through a course of clues, physical challenges, and puzzles spread across the venue. Each challenge completed earns a set of painting materials, such as paints, brushes, or canvas panels, needed for the picture phase.

2

Challenge Variety

Challenges span physical tasks requiring coordination and stamina, mental puzzles requiring lateral thinking, and team tasks requiring creative problem-solving. The variety ensures every team member contributes through their individual strengths.

3

The Shift to Collaboration

As teams earn their materials and complete their racing section, they move to the communal painting area. Teams that finish early immediately join those still competing — providing support, guidance, and energy to ensure everyone completes the course.

4

The Final Picture Assembly

With all materials earned and all teams in the painting area, teams paint their assigned section of the final picture. Sections are assembled to reveal the complete artwork — the culmination of individual competition and collective creativity.

Skills & Outcomes

Here is what your team builds beyond the activity itself:

Physical Energy & Coordination

The racing phase demands stamina, agility, and physical coordination under competitive pressure — energising the group and creating individual stories of effort and achievement.

Problem Solving Under Pressure

Mental puzzles and code-cracking challenges require teams to think clearly while physically fatigued and competitively motivated — building the capacity for high-quality thinking under stress.

Competition-to-Collaboration Shift

The dynamic transition from individual team competition to collective painting contribution mirrors the shift that high-performing organisations make between internal competition and shared execution.

Communication in Fast-Moving Environments

Decoding clues, coordinating physical challenges, and directing teammates through a course requires clear, fast, precise communication under real physical and competitive pressure.

Creative Contribution

The painting phase rewards careful, precise work rather than speed, providing an important contrast moment where different team members' strengths come to the fore.

Sense of Shared Achievement

Completing the picture together after the individual effort of the race creates a profound sense of collective achievement that neither phase alone could produce.

Who It's For

High-Energy Teams Who Need a Physical Challenge

Sales teams, operations teams, and any group that has been sitting in sessions all day will find Race the Picture the perfect physical reset, demanding, fun, and productive.

Outdoor Offsite & Resort Programmes

Designed for outdoor settings, Race the Picture makes full use of a resort or offsite venue — sending teams across the property in a way that creates spatial memory and shared stories.

New Joiner & Induction Programmes

The racing phase builds individual identity within a new team; the painting phase builds belonging through collective creation. Together, they accelerate new joiners into team culture faster than almost any other activity.

Cross-Departmental & Silo-Breaking Events

The mandatory collaboration in the painting phase ensures that teams from different departments who competed against each other, must finish by working together — a powerful organisational dynamic made real.

Graduate & Young Professional Cohorts

Fast, physical, intellectually stimulating, and creatively satisfying — Race the Picture delivers on every dimension that early career participants want from a team building experience.

Mid-Year & End-of-Year Celebration Events

The combination of competitive energy and collaborative creativity makes Race the Picture a natural fit for celebration events where you want both high energy and a meaningful shared outcome.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Trebound's facilitators set up the full treasure hunt course before the event. Clue locations are tailored to the specific venue — whether an office campus, hotel property, resort, or outdoor space — to make full use of the available environment.
Challenges include relay tasks, coordination puzzles, balance challenges, and team coordination activities. Trebound calibrates the physical demands to the group's fitness profile — challenges can be adjusted to be more or less physically demanding as needed.
The final picture is customised to the organisation — typically a brand image, company logo, motivational image, or values representation. Trebound's design team prepares the picture and divides it into team segments before the event.
Once a team completes their treasure hunt course and earns all their materials, they move to the communal painting area. Teams that arrive early are encouraged — and ultimately required — to support teams still on the course. This transition is actively facilitated and debriefed.
Light rain does not prevent the activity from running. Heavy rain requires a contingency plan — Trebound's facilitators assess conditions on-site and advise on any necessary adjustments.
