Entrepreneurship & Innovation Team Building Activity — Build, Pitch & Win
Junkyard Sales is Trebound's most entrepreneurially demanding team building challenge — and one of the most creatively liberating. Each team is provided with a collection of scrap materials and given a single brief: build a meaningful product. Not a concept. A real, tangible, functional product that solves a genuine problem for a defined target audience.
Teams must think like entrepreneurs from the moment the activity begins. They split into sub-teams: product, tech, promotions, and work in parallel to define the product, build it, design the pricing strategy, and develop the marketing pitch. The clock runs throughout, and 90 to 120 minutes after the starting whistle, every team faces the judges.
The pitch is the finale. Teams present their product to a panel of evaluators who assess creativity, practicality, pitch quality, and commercial viability. The best product and the best pitch win — but the real prize is what every participant learns about entrepreneurial thinking, rapid decision-making, and the link between creative confidence and commercial success.
Teams receive their scrap materials and begin the ideation process immediately. The product must be meaningful, functional, and targeted to a specific audience. Teams that start with the customer problem before the product consistently out-pitch teams that start with the materials.
Like a real startup, teams split into sub-teams: product design and construction, technology and functionality, branding and promotions. Sub-teams work in parallel, reporting back to a coordinating lead throughout the build phase.
Teams build their product and develop their pricing and promotion strategy simultaneously. The product must be tangible enough to demonstrate, the pricing rationale must be defensible, and the promotion strategy must be coherent and creative.
Each team presents to the evaluators a panel that observes creativity, practicality, pitch quality, and commercial viability. Teams are assessed on the strength of their product and the quality of their case for it. The best product and pitch wins.
Book with Trebound and every detail is managed end-to-end from facilitation to equipment. Your team shows up and plays.
Here is what your team builds beyond the activity itself:
Teams operate as genuine startups — defining a customer problem, building a solution, pricing it, and pitching it commercially. The activity develops an entrepreneurial mindset across all professional levels.
Building a functional product from scrap materials requires creative solutions that would never emerge from an unconstrained brief. Constraint is the mother of innovation — and Junkyard Sales makes that viscerally real.
Product, tech, and promotions sub-teams must coordinate continuously — the product must be buildable, the pitch must be accurate, and the pricing must reflect the product's actual capabilities. Misalignment is immediately visible to the judges.
The final pitch develops public communication, narrative construction, and commercial persuasion skills. Every team member can contribute to the pitch differently — making it a genuinely inclusive communication challenge.
90 to 120 minutes is not enough time to do everything well. Teams must prioritise ruthlessly — deciding what matters most to the judges and allocating their time accordingly.
Pricing, promotion, and target audience definition require teams to think strategically about their product's position in the market — even when the market is a panel of three evaluators in a conference room.
Junkyard Sales is the most direct simulation of the startup experience available in team building, brief, build, pitch, and iterate. Entrepreneurs find it instinctively familiar and unexpectedly challenging.
Teams whose daily work involves building commercial cases, pitching proposals, and winning clients will find Junkyard Sales both immediately familiar and productively revealing about their own presentation habits.
The constraint of scrap materials forces product teams to think about functional value rather than features — a rare and valuable reframe for teams that spend their professional lives adding complexity to things.
Junkyard Sales packages core entrepreneurship and business strategy concepts into a three-hour live simulation that produces more visceral learning than most full-day classroom sessions.
Senior teams that spend their days in strategy and governance find Junkyard Sales a genuinely liberating experience — the permission to build something from nothing is more unusual at the executive level than it sounds.
New professionals who have studied business concepts but never built a product pitch from scratch find Junkyard Sales a revelatory and motivating experience that builds commercial confidence rapidly.
