The mandate arrived before the supply chain did

Your ESG report needs a line about procurement. Your CSR committee has asked what the Diwali spend looks like. Someone in the leadership review used the word “optics” about last year’s plastic-wrapped hampers.

So you go looking for sustainable corporate gifts and find a market full of bamboo-coloured plastic, “eco” hampers wrapped in shrink film, and vendors who cannot tell you where anything came from.

The gap is not demand. It is evidence. Most gifting vendors sell you the word and hope nobody in your procurement team asks a second question.

What actually makes a corporate gift sustainable

Four things decide it. A gift needs to clear at least three to be worth calling green in your annual report.

The material

Rapidly renewable (bamboo, cork, jute, cotton), recycled, or biodegradable. Not plastic with a leaf printed on it.

The lifespan

A steel bottle used for four years beats a bamboo pen thrown out in three weeks. Durability is a sustainability property, and it is the one buyers most often ignore because it does not photograph as obviously.

The packaging

Usually half the waste and almost none of the conversation. Recycled kraft, seed paper, cloth wraps, or no secondary box at all.

The end of life

Can it be composted, recycled or replanted, or does it become landfill the moment the recipient is done? Seed paper and living plants win here. Mixed-material gifts, glued and laminated, are unrecyclable no matter what the material list says.

Ask any vendor, including us, for the material composition and the packaging spec in writing. If they hesitate, that answers the question.

These are the highest-lifespan gifts in the category, which makes them the most defensible in an ESG conversation.

Organic teas and coffees, cold-pressed oils, millet snacks, natural skincare, herbal wellness kits.

Living gifts

Succulents, terrariums, self-watering desk planters, sapling kits.

A succulent outlasts every trophy your company has ever handed out. It also needs the recipient to be in an office or a home with light, so check before you order 400.

Artisan and craft

Channapatna wooden toys and lacquerware, made 60 kilometres from Bangalore under a GI tag, and craft from Karnataka cooperatives.

This is the category with the best story and the least standardisation. Expect variation between pieces. That is the point, and it needs saying on the card so nobody reads it as a defect.

Packaging is the half that gets ignored

You can put a bamboo notebook inside a laminated box with a plastic ribbon and shrink-wrap the lot. Companies do it constantly, and the recipient sees the wrapping before they ever see the gift.

Worth deciding early

An unboxing that looks premium and an unboxing that is genuinely low-waste are not automatically the same brief. Recycled kraft looks like recycled kraft. If your leadership wants gloss, say so at the start and we will find the honest version of it rather than discovering the conflict at sampling.

It usually costs more per unit

Sustainable materials and small-batch craft are not price-competitive with mass-produced promotional stock. Somewhere between ten and thirty percent more is the range you should budget for, and it moves with material and quantity.

Lead times are longer

Artisan and craft-led items especially. Four to six weeks is realistic, more in festival season. A last-minute sustainable order usually means someone quietly substitutes something that is not.

Variation is real

Handmade and natural-material items are not identical to each other. Wood grain differs. Colours differ. Set that expectation with your leadership before 500 pieces arrive and someone raises a quality flag.

Some things do not exist yet

There is no genuinely sustainable version of certain electronics gifts. When that is the answer, we will say so rather than sell you a bamboo-cased charger and call it green.

We would rather lose the order than defend a claim your ESG team cannot.

Due Diligence

For the procurement and CSR team

If you are being asked to document this, the useful requests are:

  • Material composition per item, in writing.
  • Packaging specification, including inks and tapes.
  • Origin, at least to the state and the unit.
  • Certification where it exists, such as FSC for paper and wood, GOTS for organic cotton, or GRS for recycled content. Note that certification covers some categories well and others barely at all, so its absence on a handmade wooden item is not automatically a red flag.

We supply what we hold and say plainly where we do not hold it. A vendor who claims certification on everything is a vendor to be careful with.
