Build Your Own Drone & Race It — Innovation Team Building Activity
The Drone Challenge is Trebound's most technologically ambitious team building programme — a full-scale drone engineering and racing experience that takes teams from component assembly to competitive flight in a single session. Each team builds their own drone from provided components, designing a sci-fi race track and constructing obstacles for other teams to navigate. The activity runs in two parallel tracks: drone assembly and track design. Both must be complete before the race begins, requiring teams to manage their time across engineering and creative challenges simultaneously — a direct simulation of the resource allocation demands of real project environments. The finale is a timed race in which teams compete to fly their built drone around the track they collectively created. The fastest pilot in the arena wins — but the team that built the most robust drone and designed the most creative track has already demonstrated something more valuable.
Participants are divided into sub-teams. One group focuses on drone assembly — building the drone from provided components. Another group designs the race track — constructing obstacles from available materials that other drones must navigate.
The drone assembly team builds their drone from provided components following assembly instructions. Once assembled, teams practice basic flight manoeuvres — hover, directional movement, and speed control — before the race.
The track design team plans and constructs the race circuit using available materials — creating gates, obstacles, and course markers that challenge piloting precision and flying strategy.
All drones take to the track for a timed race. Teams navigate their drone through the course they collectively built, competing for the fastest lap. Safety protocols are maintained throughout.
