Overview

Icewalk is a beautifully simple outdoor team building challenge that creates one of the most visually striking displays of synchronised teamwork in the Trebound catalogue. Teams are given long wooden planks — their skis — and must glide from the start line to the finish as a completely cohesive, synchronised unit.

Every team member stands on the planks simultaneously. Every step must be taken together. If even one person falls out of sync, the whole team feels it — and the plank falls.

The challenge transforms movement itself into a powerful metaphor: progress happens only when the entire team moves in the same direction, at the same time, with the same intention.

The Blueprint — How It Works

1

The Setup

Each team receives a set of long wooden planks with ropes attached at intervals — one rope per participant. Every team member steps onto the planks and holds their rope.

2

The Movement

To move forward, every person must lift their left-plank foot at exactly the same moment, step forward together, plant the plank, and repeat with the right. Every step is a collective action.

3

The Synchronisation Challenge

Teams develop verbal calls, rhythmic chants, or counting systems to synchronise their steps. Teams that find a shared rhythm glide. Teams that don't, stumble and slow.

4

The Winner

The team that reaches the finish line first — with all members on the planks throughout — wins.

Skills & Outcomes

Here's what your team builds beyond the activity itself:

Synchronised Movement

The activity demands that every team member moves at exactly the same time — making the experience of true collective alignment physical, immediate, and unforgettable.

Collective Communication

Teams quickly develop shared calls, counts, or rhythms to coordinate their steps — a natural evolution of communication from individual to genuinely collective.

Interdependence

Every person's step affects every other person's balance. The activity makes mutual dependence physically tangible in a way that no discussion exercise can replicate.

Shared Pacing

Teams must agree on a pace — fast enough to win, slow enough to maintain synchronisation. Finding that pace is a microcosm of how teams navigate performance versus sustainability.

Adaptive Rhythm

When the team's rhythm breaks, they must pause, regroup, and restart their coordination — building the habit of deliberate resynchronisation after disruption.

Collective Identity

Successfully moving as one unit creates a visceral sense of team identity. Teams that complete Icewalk have literally moved together — and that physical memory lasts.

Who It's For

Teams Undergoing Organisational Change

Icewalk is a physical embodiment of what alignment actually looks like — powerful for teams navigating a merger, restructuring, or cultural shift.

Large Cross-Functional Groups at Offsites

Accommodates up to 25 participants per team and runs simultaneously in a race format — a spectacular visual for large group events.

Sports Day & End-of-Year Programmes

Icewalk provides a uniquely graceful, photogenic competitive moment within high-energy outdoor programmes.

Leadership Teams Exploring Alignment

For leadership teams whose organisation is struggling with strategic alignment, Icewalk makes the problem and the solution viscerally real.

New Team Formation Events

When a newly assembled team needs to build collective identity quickly, Icewalk creates a shared physical experience of moving together.

Multi-Day Offsite Programmes

Works brilliantly as a mid-programme outdoor challenge that provides a physical, embodied counterpoint to cognitive and conversational work.

What Teams Are Saying

Watching 20 people find a shared rhythm on those planks was one of the most moving things I've seen in team building. The metaphor for what we needed as a leadership team was unmistakeable.

We fell apart six times before we found our rhythm. When we did, we barely needed to speak. Everyone just knew. That's the kind of team I want in the office every day.
